Tehran: Iran has suffered two severe blows in the latest Israeli attacks. Iran has stated that Ali Mohammad Naini, the spokesperson for the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), was killed in an Israeli airstrike. Additionally, in a separate attack, General Ismail Ahmadi, the intelligence chief of Iran's Basij Force, was killed.

Who was Ali Mohammad Naini?

Brigadier General Ali Mohammad Naini served as the spokesperson and Deputy Chief of Public Relations for Iran's Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps. He was appointed to this position in July 2024 by the IRGC Commander-in-Chief, Hossein Salami. Born in 1957, Naini was a veteran of the Iran-Iraq War; he was also wounded during the conflict.

Naini held the rank of Second Brigadier General. He frequently issued statements on behalf of the IRGC, which often contained warnings regarding Iran's military readiness, as well as its missile and drone capabilities. Ali Mohammad Naini served as the IRGC spokesperson.

Amidst escalating tensions in mid-March 2026, he asserted that Iran was fully prepared for a high-intensity war lasting at least six months. He further stated that several new-generation missiles and drones had not yet been deployed.

Mohammad Naini remained on the frontlines throughout the entire duration of the Iran-Iraq War (1980–88). Over the course of approximately eight years, he served in various roles during the conflict.

During the first year of the war, he served as the Chief of Public Relations for the Qadr Battalion. He also assumed responsibilities for public relations and operations at the Abuzar Barracks in Sarpol-e Zahab. Later, he served as the Deputy for Frontline Propaganda at the Najaf Headquarters.

What did Israel say?

Israel has stated that it has struck more than 130 infrastructure sites linked to the Iranian regime. These targets included ballistic missile sites, UAV facilities, and defense systems located across western and central Iran. In a statement, Israel said: "The Israeli Air Force continues to carry out strikes in western and central Iran in order to minimize, as much as possible, the scope of shelling directed toward Israel from those regions, and to extend its air superiority over Iran."

Who was General Ismail Ahmadi?

General Ismail Ahmadi, the head of the Basij's intelligence department, was an officer affiliated with the IRGC. He served in security and intelligence roles within the organization. He was a native of Bushehr province. His role within the Basij was centered on security and intelligence matters. He had been honored on multiple occasions by IRGC Commander Hossein Salami. He served as an associate and deputy to the Basij Commander, Martyr Gholamreza Soleimani. As the Basij's intelligence chief, his role within the organization encompassed internal security, counter-espionage, and ideological oversight.

When was Ali Larijani killed?

Prior to this, Iran's de facto leader, Ali Larijani, was killed in an Israeli strike on March 17, 2026. The attack took place at night while he was at his daughter's residence. His son, several bodyguards, and other associates were also killed in the attack. Larijani was widely regarded as the likely interim leader of Iran following the death of Khamenei. His death has triggered a major crisis within Iran's leadership.
